Quick recap of my Introduction to Memcache talk

On Wednesday night spoke about an 'Introduction to Memcache' at the FB Developers Garage which was held at UCT. Chatted about various things ranging from Memcached, Starling, the Evented version of Starling, background queue processing, etc.

I will be writing a more detailed post during the course of the next few days or so.

Further reading in the interim and the patch for the memcache-client:

BarCampCapeTown

BarCamp Cape Town
I'm looking forward to BarCamp coming to Cape Town.

Ideally we can chat, discuss, look at what the Web 2.0 thing is all about. Apparently the guys at Stormhoek are sponsoring wine for the event which is interesting to see them trageting the local population of geeks.

Why don't open source conferences occur down in .za?

One presentation I'd like to attend at some stage is Brad Fitzpatrick's
LiveJournal's Backend: A History of Scaling. Maybe someone can videotape it and put it online?

Also the costs associated with attending a conference overseas is way too expensive as Neil explained when he was wanting to attend a python conference.

Cost of conferences

Neil points out that the cost of attending conferences for Open Source languages are expensive for us South Africans. The question then gets raised is why don't we organise / arrange / make one happen here which covers things from say PHP, Python, Apache, FreeBSD, Linux, etc. etc. all under one roof in Cape Town and import speakers such as Rasmus Lerdorf, Derick Rethans, etc. down to Cape Town?

Maybe some stands with companies like Zend Technologies, Red Hat, MySQL etc. etc.
