Firefox 3.5 Regression issues with wildcard SSL certificates

I really hate educating people how to do the following, but a bit of an explanation around this. Mozilla Firefox 3.5 now does not play nice with wildcard SSL certificates where you do things like service.servername.example.com when you only have a wildcard SSL certificate for *.example.com - the guys at Mozilla have marked the bug as "Won't Fix" which basically means that one now needs to teach people how to bypass this warning.

firefox-wildcard-untrusted.jpg

The latest version of Mozilla Firefox 3.5 has issues with wildcard SSL certificates and is giving warnings that "This Connection is Untrusted" when visiting https://service.servername.example.com/ - this is unfortunately an issue with the Mozilla Firefox 3.5 web browser. You will need to click on the "Add Exception..." link, ignore the warning about "You are about to override how Firefox identifies this site. Legitimate banks, stores, and other public sites will not ask you to do this.". Click on "Get Certificate" and then click on "Confirm Security Exception". A bug is being filled with Mozilla about this regression in their software.

Hopefully Mozilla can release a patch Firefox 3.5.1 which reverts this regression in their software.

Anyway here is the list of bugs I'm going to be keeping an eye on for this issue:

Are you a Flock Star?

Flock LogoAre you a Flock Star? I've upgraded Flock (an open source web-browser based on Firefox).

I just love the built in "Feed Reader". It's what Firefox 1.5.0.4 is missing.

Go and download a copy of Cardinal, Flock 0.7
today! It's great. It's more nippier than Firefox, has features which Firefox is missing.

Flock is the new Firefox

Flock is the new Firefox. Interesting direction taken to produce their own web-browser based on Firefox.

Meet the flockers. Some of them like Bart have been contributing to the Mozilla codebase for quite some time, including Jon Hicks who designed the Firefox logo.

Pasting Wrapped URLs

Andrei Zmievski posted the following Firefox tip on his blog which is quite useful for pasting links which go over two lines in mutt:

Here's another Mozilla/Firefox tip: if you copy a URL wrapped over multiple lines from somewhere and try to paste it into the address bar, you will end up only with the first line of it. To fix it, go to about:config and change editor.singleLine.pasteNewlines setting to 3 or add:

user_pref("editor.singleLine.pasteNewlines", 3);

to your user.js file. Now all the line breaks will be removed upon pasting.

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.6 Released

Thunderbird: reclaim your inbox

Just days after the release of Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.5, Thunderbird 1.0.6 is now available for download. This latest version should resolve the extension problems that were accidentally introduced in Thunderbird 1.0.5. In particular, the popular Enigmail PGP add-on should now work correctly.

To get Thunderbird 1.0.6, head to the Thunderbird product page or the Thunderbird 1.0.6 directory on ftp.mozilla.org. More information about the changes in this version can be found in the Thunderbird 1.0.6 Release Notes.

Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 Released

Firefox: Rediscover the web

Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 has been released. As we reported previously, API changes in last week's Firefox 1.0.5 broke some extensions. This version should resolve the problems.

Firefox 1.0.6 can be downloaded from the Firefox product page or the Firefox 1.0.6 directory on ftp.mozilla.org. Consult the Firefox 1.0.6 Release Notes for more information.

Deer Park

For some odd reason Firefox 1.0.4 has been feeling slow of late. So I've upgraded to Deer Park RC1 which is moving towards becoming Firefox 1.1.0. So far so good. Deer Park seems to be using a lot less memory when browsing the .net and having numerous tabs opened to various websites.

Firefox buglet with middle mouse button

Mozilla Firefox
This is prob better classed as a UI issue considering that the middle mouse button is inconsitent across platforms. It turns out that under using the middle mouse button under unix is supposed to be an easy way to paste a URL apparently which can be disabled via the following option in your prefs.js file

user_pref("middlemouse.contentLoadURL", false);

Which removes that annoying pasting misfeature and fixes the middle mouse button to being consistent when using Firefox over multiple operating systems.

Time to change your webbrowser?

Mozilla Firefox
We keep hearing about exploits for Windows Internet Explorer doing the rounds.

I would suggest that people rather start using firefox which is a more secure webbrowser. It has many features which IE does not have including:

  • Tabbed browsing
  • Popup blocker
  • Better find text in document support

Just to name a few.

Is Firefox not going to crash?

Mozilla Firefox
I'm wondering when Mozilla Firefox is going to start behaving like a decent webbrowser like earlier versions of Firefox which did not crash as often as the 0.1.0 RC1. It would be a good start!

Maybe it's just me but it's sort of highly annoying that this happens as you normally tend to have lots of tabs open while working and doing research for work based projects and what not.

Maybe Firefox should render a page that informs you that the site you are viewing has badly written HTML etc. etc. and stop parsing?

XUL is cool

XUL is cool! Mozilla Amazon Browser is quite cool! Actually imagine if FNB redevelops their Ebucks website to allow users who use Mozilla Firefox to like get a XUL version of Ebucks while IE and others get the normal HTML version of the site. Looks like the way of the future!

Patch the various recently reported security vulnerabilities in Mozilla. This is being done instead of the update to 1.0 PR 1 since we're in a ports freeze, and too many big changes is not a good idea.

This update covers the following Mozilla bugs:

Mozilla 1.3 is out!

Mozilla 1.3 is out. It was released a couple days ago on the 13th March 2003, and I've managed to get round to downloading it. The layout looks decent, they've even got a new logo, which reminds me of Netscape's Navigator and Communicator series logo.
