The guys at Joyent, where this website resides with their TextDrive division, do a pod cast called "ps pipe grep", which I've been rather enjoying.
Basically it's Dave (youngobungo), Jason (the hoff) and Ben (benr) and they've been talking about everything from Mongrel, Apache, Amazon Web Services, Solaris, Joyent Core, SFTPDrive, virtualization, Sun Blackbox, and a truck load more things relating to how the web hosting industry has been changing over the years.
The Internet Society South African Charter AGM was held in Cape Town this evening. Members attended the meeting either in person or via a combination of IRC.
The audio feeds from the Bandwidth Barn was a little choppy a couple of times during the AGM for those of us listening into the feed. Neil Blakey-Milner organised the audio feeds which were run from two icecast servers (one at BWB and the other on Calvin's box in the USA).

The short of it is that on the Telkom has lost their monopoly on voice communications in South Africa, effective 1 February 2005. I would have liked to have seen this occuring sooner, and the unbundling of the local loop would have also been another step in the right direction.
“Because of technological developments, there is no longer any difference in the transmission of voice, video and data, therefore it is no longer necessary to prohibit the provision of voice by VANS,” says Matsepe-Casaburri.

Good news albeit over 10 years late. Our infamous telecommunications minister has stopped napping during parliment to announce that she will be granting the SNO licence on the 17th of September 2004.
